Week Away :: Completed

I've just returned from a wonderful trip to Baja California.  It was very relaxing as I read a few Amish romance short stories. I know silly, but I haven't read anything good since Hunger Games.  The Amish romance novels are actually quite good.  I've been enjoying the Jacob's Daughter series by Samantha Jillian Bayarr on Amazon.  The kinde edition is only $1.99 each.  Can't wait till the next one is released.  Anyway, I also took a few hand sewing projects with me on my trip.  

I received a crochet edged flannel blanket when I had Jack and have thought about it for three years.  Then I stumbled across a pin on Pintrest for a cute pillowcase crochet edge tutorial by You Go Girl.  Needless to say I ran to Joann's bought the flannel and the yarn from Michael's.  I am so not impressed with the flannel selection at Joann's but I didn't have time to order any.  This was truly the only print I liked.  Then when I went to pick out the Crochet yarn they only had white and off white in size 3.  Weird.  So I went to Michael's Craft store and they had several colors to choose from.  Thankfully, I had a baby in mind who was actually born yesterday.  It's already on its way to wrap around her.  

Also got a few more Hexagons done.  19 to be exact.  Finally get to update that little Hexagon counter in my side bar.  Paper piecing truly is a good traveling sewing project.  When I can't take the machine with me that is.

  

Now I have 69 hexagons completed and a few flowers are being arranged.  Aren't they fun?

Ooo, and I could hardly wait to get home and open this Vintage Amish Children embroidery transfer pattern.  I bought it on Ebay just before we left for Baja and now I can't wait to try out the hand embroidery stitches. I was practicing on my vacation as well.  Sorry too boring of a picture to show you my practice stitches.  But I do promise to share as I work on these in the future.  I didn't know about Aunt Martha's patterns until recently and I think I'm gonna love doing them.  Any of you ever tried these patterns?  I looked on Flickr and didn't find a group, so I've started one.  Join in if you'd like.  Patterns are under $2 at JoAnns.

Weekend Garden

Just  a quick update on my garden:

 

We've had a bunch of growth!  I'm so proud to say my garden has made it this far.  I haven't killed anything yet.  My corn, in the back, already has one ear on it.  The carrots are hiding in this picture, but I picked a few today.  I think I may have planted the cauliflower a bit late, although they are my biggest, there is no sign of veggies.  The beats should have been harvested already, but they are the size of marbles.  So, I've thinned them out and fertilized the garden in hopes for bigger beats and carrots.  The Spinach has been my strongest yet!  Ironic, right?  Pop-eye says spinach makes you strong, probably because its pretty hearty itself.  We are able to make at least one salad for 4 each week.  It just keeps growing back.  I love it.

Lots of green tomatoes on the vines, so in a few more weeks we'll be enjoying them too.

 

Here is my sweet little Sheriff Jack.  He is strutting his new cowboy hat and badge along with a stick horse I pulled from the attic.  It was mine when I was a little girl.  My Aunt made each of my sisters and I one.  Love the calico print on it.  I love sharing my childhood toys with my son, especially the handmade ones.  I don't like however that things from my childhood are now considered vintage.  That used to be what I called my mom's things.

We are headed to Baja for a week, and I've packed a few hand sewing projects to keep me somewhat productive on vacation.  I'm looking forward to listening to the waves in the morning when I wake and taking naps in the hammocks. 

FYI: my shop will be on vacation mode until, Tuesday, July 10.

Short Hours :: A Finished Quilt

We had a wonderful Father's Day.  Here is my hubby and son sharing the special day together.

I've finished up the Short Hours quilt too. This is a traditional quilt pattern called hour glass and I just loved making it with my scraps from my Swooning Picnic Quilt.  The array of colors makes this a really fun little girl's doll quilt or baby girl bassinet quilt.

Again I quilted using simple straight lines through each little block.  I love my walking foot, it never gives me trouble and always does a nice job.  

 I grabbed the left over yardage for the backing and some binding.  I hand stitched the binding closed this time.  Thought it'd be a fun hand project and it was.  *Little tip, use hand quilting thread, not the regular cotton thread used for the machine.  Hand quilting thread is stiffer and doesn't tangle or knot as easily.  I finished it in no time at all.  I like the way it appears seamless on the back.  Maybe this will become a new habit...maybe.

My supply of this fabric collection is very slim now.  But thats okay, I've now got room for new prints to stash (I'll share when they arrive).

Projects

Hi there!  got some new projects to share with you all.  First off, its SUMMER TIME!!!  I'm so glad its summer even though we have the 'June Gloom' thing going on here in SoCal, its still summer.  I've already enjoyed a bonfire, laying on the beach building sandcastles, and watermelon.  What do you look forward to during summer?

Okay, now for the projects:

I've actually been working on this since/during the Swoon quilt.  Its from the scraps I cut off to make some of the flying geese pieces in the blocks.  I just couldn't bare to throw them out.  If you've made any swoon blocks you know what part I'm talking about.  Anywho, I thought triangles would make a great hourglass mini quilt.  I'm one short, cause I trimmed too much, but I've decided to throw in a little square of Pezzy in Red from American Jane.  More to come on this project.

I've been desperately longing for these too books.  I finally ordered them off my long wish list on Amazon.  I'm so NOT disappointed.  In hopes to learn some hand stitching this needlework book has some really amazing easy to follow pictures and directions.  And the Denyse book, how could I not add that to my collection?  There are a couple quilt patterns I'm already planning to use, like this one:

Its called the Churn Dash.  My 1930s peach yeardage has been collecting lavender friends for a while now with no inspiration what-so-ever.  Until now that is.  I think this collection will really like the new arrangements I have planned for them.  So excited!

Okay, I've really been excited to share this last project with you.  A little back story:  I remembered the other day that my true love mentioned a while back something about wanting a "custom shirt".  I have no idea what he really had in-mind, but I got inspired to make him one none the less.  I've never made a shirt for a man, but I did make myself a cowgirl shirt in my college sewing class.  Can't be much different.  Being Father's Day and all, I thought this would be a great time to give it a try.

I chose a pattern that was more fitted.  My hubby is tall and thin, so most shirts that fit his broad shoulders are really baggy at the waist.  Hope this Vogue 8759 pattern is a good fit.  Crazy how making clothes is more expensive than buying them now.  I purchased this nice light weight linen in a medium brown.  Don't really know why I chose this fabric, but I really like it.  It was a toss between blue and brown.  He looks good in both colors.

I really enjoy making apparel, but its projects like these I really wish I'd splurged and bought myself an Overlock years ago.  I still can't believe I don't have one.  I'm positive I'd sew more garments if I did.  I tried Facebook last week to see if anyone could lend me one for the week.  Crickets.  They are a rarity.  Maybe I'll save up this summer and bite the bullet.  For now, these seams will be finished on my domestic best friend, Janome MC 3500.

By the way, my true love already knows about it.  I had to measure him, and he shares his home office with my sewing room.  So no surprise on the gift.  But thats no big deal, right?

Swooning Picnic :: A Finished Quilt

Oh Yah!  This is a pretty fun looking quilt, don't you think?

Swooning Picnic Quilt Top

I just loved quilting this one.  I haven't hand quilted since the first quilt I made for my husband. 

I loved the peacefulness of sitting on the couch and using perlé cotton embroidery thread.  Honestly, I hadn't used it before and I got my inspiration from the wee pixie. 

Doesn't the rooster look even cuter all framed with the quilting?  I think so.  

Here is the backing, simply pieced with four large squares meeting in the middle (almost).

And because stripes just make the perfect binding, I couldn't resist.

Swooning Again

Hi, I've been up to more sewing.  Actually, I finished these last three Swoon blocks in one week.  I've been hand quilting it for the last two weeks, and finishing up on the binding today.  

Swoon Block 7

Block 7 is not my favorite.  I don't think this large gingham print is that great for piecing,  but from afar blended into the quilt top, it's not bad.  If I had more time to make another block, I probably would have replaced it.

Block 8 is probably one of my favorite combinations. Reminds me of seaglass.

Swoon Block 9

All along I've been planning this block for the center.  Remember when originally I bought this Alexander Henry print from Joann's on accident thinking it was part of the Picnic & Fairgrounds collection?  Silly me:D  However the colors compliment each other so well, so I decided to use it in the quilt. I just love how the red rooster gets center stage.

After much thought and prayer I've decided to donate this quilt to a silent auction benefit for my girl friend Kelly who has been fighting breast cancer.  This weekend is her benefit.  Sadly I wont be able to attend because of a family graduate celebration.  But I hope it brings much needed funds her way.
