FWQAL :: Week 4

I know I should really be on week 7, but I started late.  This week I chose two blocks from the same letter and used some of my new fabrics.  And...I found I have a new favorite!

[12] Broken Sugar Bowl

Quote from the letter that inspired the block:  "Raised in the country, I determined young never to stay here.  I pursued an education in a large city, and then, lo, I lost my heart to a farmer!" Mrs. G.R.E. Morgan County, Ala.

Block Stats: Hope Valley by Denyse Schmidt,  Peas & Carrots by American Jane, and the white one is a vintage sheet.

[33] Farmer's Puzzle

Quote from the same letter as above that inspired the block:  "We are the happiest couple I know, have more chance to enjoy each other on a farm than elsewhere and I can wish no greater blessing for my daughter than the love of a farmer like 'Dad.'" Mrs. G.R.E. Morgan County, Ala.

I love the ribbon-like design. Thankfully my extra efforts in fussy cutting stripes paid off. Just as others in this Quilt Along are saying, my husband too said at first sight, this one looks like a swastika. I see it too, but I can easily overlook it. I read once on another blog, I can't find it now, but I remember it saying before the German's used this symbol, it had a happier meaning to it. Block, #4, which I haven't made yet, looks more like a swastika than this one I think.

And here are all my blocks so far:

Some are a little rough, but hopefully with the saching, the imperfections will disappear:/

Katie Jump Rope :: A Finished Quilt

Quilt Top
Finally!!! My Katie Jump Rope Quilt is finished.  This makes me SO happy!  I've been working on this quilt longer than I wanted to.  The cutting and piecing of this bow tie quilt was simple, but the applique of the center ties was a little more time consuming than I had anticipated.  Not sure if corner piecing would have been much faster though.  I was limited with the size scraps I purchased, so applique was my only option for this pattern.  And I've really wanted to make a bow tie quilt ever since I fell in love with the collection.  I am so happy,  I'm smiling:D

Okay, so I made this pattern up myself and gathered some helpful tips from a similar quilt done on Flickr! here.  Although this quilter had suggested a double-sided fusible web, I used stitch witchery and it was fabulous.  Possible pattern coming soon.  I just have to compile my steps.

I wish it wasn't so HOT out!  I'd love to cuddle up with this quilt right now.  I'm working with very small scraps left over for a toss pillow.  This is a great start to a beautiful weekend, don't you think?

Spontanious Cut, A Lot of Magic, & Monday Arrival

Well, I finally did it...I cut my hair!!!

I've never had short hair (well shorter than shoulder length), and I did this without consulting my man.  He has told me before that he REALLY likes my long hair, but I really wanted to try short.  So, I set an appointment and let my friend Jill go at it.  Joe was shocked at first, but does admit to liking it.  I LOVE it!

After trimming my mane, we had a date night with a couple friends visiting from Nashville.  They took us to the exclusive Magic Castle Club in Hollywood.  It was definitely one of those nights you never forget.  The multiple shows of magic, ahhhmazing!  The comedy, so so funny.  I really needed a good dose of laughter.  The food...deeelish!  I even got to indulge in my favorite desert, creme bruleĆ©.

We are so blessed to have had such a fun night out with great friends.  Thanks Gills!

And last but not least, my postman delivered these treats today.  Aren't they cute!
The two on the left are by American Jane, Daisies on Green of Peas & Carrots, and Green Flowers/Ribbons of Playground; purchased from ClayDeal.  And the two on the right are vintage sheet FQs purchased from JennasAttic.  I think they are great additions to my green stash for my Farmer's Wife Quilt, don't you?

Hope to share some blocks later this week with you.  Until then...keep smiling:D

FWQAL + Kona Greens

My greens are here!

From left to right Kona Cotton in Green Grass, Spring, and Green Tea.  I also bought Ash, cause I thought it would coordinate well with the DS Quilt prints.  Which it does...happy me:)

And... I made up for last week.  Here are 3 Farmer's Wife blocks.  I picked some easy ones for this week.
[73] Rainbow Flowers

Quote from the letter that inspired the block:  "The mind of a  farmer's wife is continually broadening by the variety of her interests.  Bees, berries, babies, cheese, chicks, canning; grub garments, garden-do these suggest an empty mind?" Mrs. G. B. H. Richland Couty, Mont.

Block facts: Greenfield Hill by DS Quilts, Kona Cotton Ash + Green Grass

[102] Whirlpool

Quote:  "I want my daughter to marry a farmer that they may live and work together in God's free air and sunshine.  Here is happiness.  Here is health.  The wonders of nature are all about them and even God Himself seems nearer here." Mrs. S. M. M. Franklin County, Ohio

Block facts: Greenfield Hill by DS Quilts, Kona Cotton Green Tea

[56] Maple Leaf

Quote:  "Can you think of anything in the city that compares with an orchard in bloom?"  Mrs. G. W. N. Ingham County, Mich

Clean House - the easy way

Here is a secret...I really hate to clean.  Okay, its not really a secret, but it finally pushed me to the limit.  Cleaning just got too complicated.  It shouldn't be complicated, right?  But it can be.  I mean,  how many different types of cleaners do I need?  1 for my kitchen surfaces, 2 for my floors, 3 for my bathrooms, etc.  All the specified cleaners drove me nuts!  When it came time to clean and I'd be out of something it meant another trip to the store or a challenge in my thinking...will the toilet still be clean if I don't use the Clorox?  Not only did the number of cleaners kill me, but the number of paper towels I used.  Using paper towels meant another cleaning tool to keep in stock, and a lot more trash.  Cleaning became a high bar I didn't really care to reach.  I mean, I want a clean house, of course!, but where does this become a unhealthy obsession?  I needed to draw my own line of "its clean, enough" so I could have so fun around here!

So, I changed the way I cleaned house.  I didn't go looking for solutions, they were kind of something I'd stumble upon and implemented over time.

Previously I mentioned a few inspirations here that changed my cleaning ways.  How have I changed, you ask?  Well I'll tell you.  Its simple really (SIMPLE, now doesn't that sound nice?)  It may not sound simple, but it is...I make my own cleaning solution!  I know what your thinking...'how is that simple?'  Its simple because I no longer have to remember to buy disinfecting solutions for each room in my house.  Now I have one cleaner and it takes care of it ALL.  I know its non-toxic, natural, fresh, and easy to make.

The recipe I use in a spray bottle:
1/2 White Vinegar (natural disinfectant)
1/2 Water
1 tsp Dr. Bonner's Castile Soap (comes super concentrated and in multiple fragrances)
*for glass surfaces, omit the castile soap

I buy the white vinegar in a 1 gallon jug 2x a year, and castile soap 1x a year both at the local grocer.  You can also buy it here.   It has so many uses, from laundry detergent to baby shampoo.  So gentle yet does the job.  Although vinegar has a strong odor, it disappears when it dries, leaves no streaks, and kills mold/mildew.

If I need an extra scrubby gritty cleaner, I use good old-fashioned Borax!  Find it on the laundry isle and the box will tell you all its wonderful uses.  I use it in the toilet, laundry, shower, oh and its wonders on chrome; sparkle city!  It wont scratch the finish I promise!

Other really useful tools in my cleaning bucket are microfiber cloths and rags from old towels.  No more paper towels!  We haven't purchased any since...gosh I can't remember.  Peroxide is great for tough stains on carpet, upholstery and clothes.  And Baking Soda is great for killing odors and some stains.  My home no longer consists of bleach or other harsh chemicals.

I guess you can say this is a little old school.  Women used to dust, sweep/vacuum and use just plain soap to clean house.  Their children survived, or at least my parents did and I'm here to prove it!  Ha ha.

I just thought I'd share this because I thought it might help others to lower their bar in cleaning.  Life is too short to clean all the time.  Do what needs doing and enjoy the outdoors (where God keeps a clean house!)

Hugs,
Lindsay

FWQAL - 3rd block

[65] Peaceful Hours

This week got away from me, and I only managed to get one block done.  Not sure I love this one, kind of wish it had  a touch more contrast.  This one had the smallest pieces! In the midst of creation, I was not confident it would take its proper form, but in the end, it was perfect!

Quote from the letter that inspired the block: "We know, because we have tried it, that our family life could never have been kept so intact, nor our happiness so secure, if we had lived any place other than on the farm." C. Mc. D. B. Marion County Ind.

Block Stats:  Hope Valley + Greenfield Hill by DS Quilts

I am so anxiously awaiting my solid order to arrive.  I'm really wanting to make my next blocks with some solids.

Happy and safe 4th of July everyone!
